Would you like to take part in a treasure trail and win "Beer for a Year"? Interested? Read on.......

We've teamed up with the makers of Cumberland Ale & Jennings Brewery to bring you Cumberland Ale Geotrail's they start and finish at some of Cumbria's most popular pubs, and each one finishes with a chance to "Beer a Year".

What is a Geotrail?

It's a variation on the sport of Geocaching. Each trail is a great walk in it's own right, in addition it's an exciting treasure trail which can be followed by all the family using GPS or Map & Compass. We give you a list of map coordinates and cache clues, you navigate to the locations, solve the cache clues, send the answers & questionnaire to us here at GPS Training. All correct entries go into our annual draw to win "Beer for a Year"

If you like walking in the countryside, like to follow new trails, are interested in walks that end in a country pub, enjoy treasure hunts & Geocaching, or interested in GPS or navigation in general then our Geotrail's will test and improve your navigation skills. Our GeoTrails are unique in that they combine all these interests into one package; they have proved popular with those attending our GPS training courses, our friends and our families. We hope you enjoy them too!

How can I get started and what kit do I need?

Firstly choose and download one of the trails. It will contain a list of map coordinates and cache clues, if followed in the correct sequence they will lead the player on the trail designed by the Geotrail Master. To take part the basic requirements are simple a GPS and either a paper or digital map, or a map and compass. Any GPS will allow you to enter a list of coordinates as waypoints and save them to it's database or waypoint list, you can then ask the GPS to navigate or GoTo any waypoint in the list. Remember a GPS only thinks in straight lines and will happily navigate you over a cliff, so you have to consult a map and think for it by contouring to your chosen location.

Enter the cache clue coordinates as a waypoint into your GPS either manually or using a digital mapping software system like Memory-Map or Quo. Modern GPS units will allow you to name the waypoint and enter the cache clue as a message. If you are using a DMS you could print out a map to help you locate the clues in the field.

Now you're ready to go - simply choose each waypoint in turn and GoTo, once again remember a GPS is designed to get you to within 15m of your destination after that you must use your eyes. Good Luck and have fun!!
