GPS Training Educational
takes to the Field
GPS Training have had increasing numbers of teachers and youth group leaders wishing to find out how they can use Digital Mapping and GPS in the curriculum, and on field trips.
The fact that this is now included in classroom curriculum , and has been recognised by DfES in contributing towards raising achievement is adding increased pressure on them to understand these new technologies.
The following needs have been identified by a recent study by Lancaster University.
- •There is very little coordinated information available to teachers and those working with young people on how they can use these technologies inside and outside the classroom
- •Potential users often find it difficult to understand how these systems work and their practical applications particularly in education
- •There is a need for training to be made available before users purchase equipment to allow them to make informed decisions on the most appropriate kit (hardware and software) to deliver learning that meets the students needs
- •There is a clear need for ongoing technical support that meets the needs of education
- •For teachers there is little information available on how to create interesting and meaningful opportunities to integrate this technology into opportunities for learning
- •There are currently a number of different initiatives that are being led by different individuals who are working in different areas. There is a need for an assurance of quality that FSC GPST can provide
- •Currently there is no ‘one stop shop’ for teachers to find all the information and support they require.
GPST & FSC the perfect partnership
We are now working with the Field Studies Council to address these issues and are now working on a three year joint initaitive to ensure that FSC take a lead nationally to create centres of excellence through thier UK wide network of centres.
These centres will become ‘resource centres’ promoting interest and providing support towards the provision of these technologies for use within the curriculum and on out of classroom learning led by FSC or teachers.
