Getting Started with GPS and Digital Maps
One Day Course: £79 per person per day
This one day course is an easy-to-understand introduction to using GPS and digital maps. The aim of the day is that you will leave the course with the skills to use a GPS confidently and safely at a basic level and understand the advantages of linking it to a digital mapping system.
The day is a mixture of practical outdoor exercises and classroom activities using GPS with waypoints downloaded from a digital map system. Basic GPS safety techniques will also be considered as well as how to choose a GPS that is right for your needs.
Is this course right for you?
You do not have to own a GPS or have any experience of using one. If you do not already own a GPS we will have a choice of GPS for you to use on the day. All the jargon and technical features will be explained as we go along Our courses will cover Garmin, Satmap, Lowrance & Memory–Map Adventure 2800 GPS systems.
Although most of the learning points of the course are easily transferable to other products and brands, please note that there is usually not enough time to address specific product-related questions that are outside the scope of the course.
What will I learn?
The table below shows the programme for the day. As you can see it covers all the topics needed to set up your GPS and use it out on the hill. There is a lot to take in and learn and there will be practical exercises during the day to make sure you know --- ‘how to’, ‘when to’, & ‘what if’.
However if you get home and have second thoughts on anything you have been shown during the day---- don’t worry as we have created just the thing for you --- our GPSTraining OnLine Resource
Please remember:
This is not a basic navigation training course. If you join this course it is assumed that you can use a map and compass for basic navigation. These topics are covered in our ‘Online Resource’- - check out before you come on the Getting Started Day. We also run a series of Map & Compass days sponsored by Silva™ that will provide you with an excellent set of basic map and compass skills.
It is also highly recommended you regularly update your GPS software and it would be useful if you check this before you arrive for the training day. Unsure how to do it?--- Check out our ‘Online Resource’
