Getting Started with GPS and Digital Maps

Day one of our 2 day Course

£79 per person per day or book both days for £125

This course is an easy-to-understand introduction to using GPS and digital maps. The aim of the day is that you will leave the course with the skills to navigate using a GPS confidently and safely at a basic level and understand the advantages of linking it to a digital mapping system.

The day is a mixture of practical outdoor exercises and classroom activities; our experience is that whilst every GPS comes with a user manual most people prefer to be practically shown how to use and navigate with the device. The first day of our 2 day course introduces you to the manual use of the GPS and includes:

Buttons & Keys and what the GPS screens show

  • How to Mark and Read your position
  • Correct GPS setup
  • How to create a Waypoint & edit its properties (Name, Symbol, and Location)
  • What the map page shows and how to navigate using the map page
  • How to find a Waypoint and navigate to it (GoTo)
  • Routes creation and navigation
  • Find out what’s new in the world of GPS
  • Learn which digital mapping is the most suitable for your needs

Is this course right for you?

You do not have to own a GPS or have any experience of using one. If you do not already own a GPS we will have a choice of GPS for you to use on the day.  All the jargon and technical features will be explained as we go along; our courses will cover Garmin, Satmap, Lowrance & Memory–Map Adventure 2800 GPS systems.

Although most of the learning points of the course are easily transferable to other products and brands, please note that there is usually not enough time to address specific product-related questions that are outside the scope of the course.

The contents of this course do stand alone but the maximum benefit is obtained by taking the two GPS training days consecutively.

What will I learn?

The table below shows the programme for the day. As you can see it covers all the topics needed to set up your GPS and use it out on the hill. There is a lot to take in and learn and there will be practical exercises during the day to make sure you know --- ‘how to’, ‘when to’, & ‘what if’.

However if you get home and have second thoughts on anything you have been shown during the day---- don’t worry as we have created just the thing for you --- our GPSTraining OnLine Resource

Please remember:

This is not a basic navigation training course. If you join this course it is assumed that you can use a map and compass for basic navigation. These topics are covered in our ‘Online Resource’- - check out before you come on the Getting Started Day. We also run a series of Map & Compass days sponsored by Silva™ that will provide you with an excellent set of basic map and compass skills.

It is also highly recommended you regularly update your GPS software and it would be useful if you check this before you arrive for the training day. Unsure how to do it?--- Check out our ‘Online Resource’
