GPST Hillwalking Venues - 2010

In addition to our establishes venues Denton House & Juniper Hall we are running hillwalking courses at two adult educational establishments The Ty'n Dwr Outdoor Centre in Llangollen North Wales and the Field Studies Center Blencathra Nr Keswick.

Having read about the hillwalking cource content on the previous page we thought you might like a closer look at all this years course venues. All our venues offer comfortable but reasonably priced accommodation with a single room option.

We deliberately don't include the cost of accommodation in our course prices, whether it be our regular GPS courses or these Hillwalking courses; As it gives locals or anyone with their own accommodation the option to attend our courses without paying a premium for unrequired accommodation, yet anyone who does have a distance to travel can be assurred that they have a comfortable room after a tiring day on the hill and decent breakfast before setting out on their next days training.

Our Venues

Denton House - North Lakes

Nestling in the shadow the Northern Fells Denton House is situated in the pretty village of Hesket Newmarket managed by Susan and Alan Armstrong it has a well deserved reputation as a walker friendly Bed & Breakfast establishment.

With such great walking within a short drive of the village, we need only travel a short distance to be on the open fells perfect for country for learning how to navigate. You can be assured that at Denton House you'll be comfortable warm and well fed.

One added advantage of Hesket Newmarket is that the Village Shop, Pub and Brewery are all owned and run as a cooperative by the village; so with the pub virtually next door you need never stray far for one of the best pints in the Lakes

The Field Studies Center - Blencathra

Our courses here are run in partnership with FSC (The Field Studies Council) an environmental charity committed to helping people understand and be inspired by the natural world; and where better to do this than in the shadow of one of the Lakes most impressive mountains Saddleback or Blencathra.

The Blencathra Center has magnificent views over the fells and fabulous walking right out of the door and offers comfortable rooms with plenty good wholesome food to keep you going on a busy weekend.

With Thelkeld and its two pubs and the bright lights of Keswick just a short drive away why not add an extra day and explore this delightful part of the Lakes?

Juniper Hall Field Center Dorking Surrey

In response to calls for a venue south of Wigan we found Juniper Hall near Dorking; offering interesting walks straight from the door onto the mixed heath & woodlands of Box Hill its the best we can hope for in Surrey.

This is our second year at FSC Juniper Hall; which has the advantage of having easy access to the M25 yet the peace and tranquility of its own grounds away from the crowds of commuterland.

Ty'n Dwr Outdoor Centre - Wales

Newly refurbished at a cost of over 2 million pounds by the University of Central Lancashire Ty'n Dwr offers first class facilities and comfortable accommodation with a short drive of the center of Llangollen.

New for 2010 GPST will be running both GPS and Hillwalking courses at Ty'n Dwr; which in its previous life was the home of a wealthy Welsh industrialist and then a YHA; now owned and run by ULCLAN as a center for outdoor activities linked to the university.

Llangollen is a popular area for walkers and people interested in our industrial heritage with the Llangollen Canal and the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct across the River Dee worth the journey alone and is simply a must-see.
