  • Maximum number of places per day: 3

course notes

The aim of the course is to extend the basic GPS skills you may have learned on one of our 2 day Garmin GPS courses in a practical way on a day in the hills with one of our GPS experts.

Our day is based at the village hall in Clayton just off the A23 and within easy walking distance of the South Downs. The day will start at the village hall where you meet up with your GPS expert and tutor Ian Payne.

The day's objectives will be planned and discussed and the GPS route/routes will be sent to your GPS device either by cable or wirelessly, dependent on the model. We will then set out as a small group to practice good GPS navigation skills during the day on the South Downs.

This training day is not for GPS beginners and demands a certain level of fitness as the day's walking could reach 800 feet (240metres) and will be at least 6 miles (10km) in length on local footpaths. If you are thinking of joining us, you must bring suitable and adequate clothing, footwear, food & drink for a day in the hills and be prepared for whatever weather the day throws at us.

The objective of the day's walk will be to the Chattri Monument, a spot with fabulous views over the Downs and surrounding area (inc Brighton and the sea). The monument is a commemoration for the Indian soldiers who died in hospitals in Brighton during the Great War and were cremated at this place. Ian will tell you more about the monument on the day
